Peretite
is a big fat Goddess.
She really is fat, great folds
of fat. She has a massive round face, and a smile that
stretches right across. She has mid brown colour hair and
it is impossible to tell how old she is, she looks neither
old nor young, perhaps somewhere in her 30s or 40s. She is
very jolly, with huge fat cheeks:
"I
am the Goddess of happiness, unknown, have never been
worshipped and yet all mortals pray for happiness."
This
great Goddess visited us many times, her name is Peretite. By
the second time she visited I had tried to sketch what she
looked like, and I realised then that my attempt wasn't
nearly fat enough.
She laughed, a deep chuckle, not as
deep as Silenus, but it is a real chuckle. She seems to
laugh from her belly and she wobbles. In fact she has
about six or eight chins and they all wobble when she
laughs.
She is SO huge and SO happy.
"What a lovely picture you made of
my face. Just like me." And she roared with laughter
again. "You cheated, someone helped you," and
she chuckled again as if it was a huge joke. "I am
off now to find something else to laugh at and I give you
the gift of laughter, especially when things go a little
wrong. Laugh and your troubles will disappear."
Third
time the Goddess of happiness appeared she held my hand.
“I am back again,” and she laughed.
“You are such lovely mortals.”
She led me into a field of daisies,
hardly any grass to be seen. She is so big but somehow she
lumbered over the daisies and did not crush a single one,
she was laughing.
“You priestess deserve some happiness
and laughter. It is better for mortals than any
physics.”
I saw
a group of children, little girls sitting on the ground
making daisy chains and hanging them round each other’s
necks. Twelve children of five years of age or so. They
all were laughing and very happy but they did not see us.
“All mortals should be happy and
laugh like the children, simple pleasures are the best. I
know it is difficult, but when things go wrong turn anger
into laughter. That is my gift to you both, laugh at your
world. Laugh at those who anger you.” And she just
doubled up with laughter. “Bless you.”
The
next time she visited I heard that unmistakeable chuckle,
faint at first but then louder. Her laughter is
contagious, you just can't help but laugh along with her.
Then
she appeared. Her
lovely fat laughing face.
“You know who I am priestess,
the Goddess of happiness and laughter. Thank you for the
work that you do. Laughter has not been around you much
lately, but let it come. That is the main gift I give you.
Many lovely things will happen. I know it is hard for
mortals to be patient but I promise it will all come. Go
now with my loving blessings and my gift, of course,
happiness and laughter.”
Then
she vanished.
It had been a difficult time, for we
had started to establish contact with some seriously
fierce deities during that period. It was intense, we were
encountering deities of nature furious at humankind's
damage to their work, and when a human willingly steps
into their grasp, their first reaction was angry and would
make me suffer what it was like for the earth. No harm had
come to either of us, sure the experience was unpleasant,
but it was often so harrowing and upsetting to see, that
nothing seemed remotely funny afterward.
But when Peretite appears, her laughter
is so infectious...
I
could imagine her getting on well with Silenus, they both
have such lovely chuckles.
Her
arrival always is with the sound of deep chuckling
laughter.
"Yes, I am back with you. You
recognise me. I bring happiness wherever I go."
Then she appeared. All her chins were
wobbling with laughter. She wore a very loose-fitting
flowing robe, blue and mauve colour, sleeveless with a
cowl neckline, down to the ground. Great big fat arms and
I saw on her right wrist she wore a wide silver bracelet
studded all over with different coloured jewels. There
were diamonds, rubies and emeralds, all sparkling.
She held out her arms, she didn't
touch us but surrounded us in her embrace.
"You two dear mortals."
Suddenly I realised I was standing in
an old-fashioned fairground. I saw swings and roundabouts
and tents and test-your-strength attractions and sideshows
of all kinds. There was noise and people and different
kinds of music coming from the roundabouts and lots and
lots of excitement and laughter. Men, women and children
all happy and laughing.
"I have been considered important
enough to have my special day and when I do it is always
at a place like this."
She laughs as she talks.
"I am Peretite, Goddess of
Happiness and Laughter. As I consider myself very
important I tend to push myself forward to come into your
temple when three of us are honoured together."
We
walked through the crowds, well I walked, she floated and
the sense of fairground excitement and noise was
exhilarating.
"Sadness is not part of my nature.
Laughter is like gold. All mortals make mistakes, do
stupid things. Sometimes wish they hadn't, have bad
thoughts.
Your lives are not perfect. You do not have all you wish
for. There are few mortals who walk your earth who have a
perfect life. Some of the richest souls are unhappy. I am
pleased to see you a little happier than you were.
You
have your days when nothing seems to go right. All mortals
experience this. Learn to laugh. Happiness is a state of
mind. Anyone can find it if they want to. Remember this at
all times.
There is always something to celebrate.
Today I celebrate. Tonight the great God Kyron and
tomorrow another day of festivities."
And suddenly I had stepped back into
the temple and this huge Goddess filled the space. She
towered above us and smiled:
"Nothing
matters except love, laughter and the Olympian faith. I
leave you now with my blessings, loving blessings. But I
shall be around. I shall not leave you for long. Take the
gifts of great optimism and happiness. What else could I
give you?"
And
in a huge chuckle of laughter, she was gone.
Then a very strange thing happened...
..A
silvery light appeared above the altar and right in its
centre was a tiny speck of gold. Then a female voice and
without hesitation I found myself walking toward the speck
of gold.
I saw her, but only a shadowy figure,
but I could tell she has long hair.
"I am the daughter of the Goddess
of Happiness. A Goddess myself. Not of laughter, like she.
I dry the tears of children, turning their tears into
smiles. So you can call me the Goddess of Smiles."
From the sound of her voice I would say
she is quite young.
"When adults cry it is harder to
turn their tears into smiles but I succeed sometimes. I am
young and pretty, but not as beautiful as some great ones.
This is the first time I ever have had homage paid to me.
It pleases me and I do thank you."
The
speck of gold and the figure grew larger and closer.
"You priestess were badly injured
this morning. Let me take you to where you will be
healed."
She led me so gently and I was standing
in countryside. Grassland but no sign of trees or bushes,
only different shades and hues of green that grew in
patches. It looked very pretty. I saw movement, some young
nymphs picking from the larger strands of grass. Four of
them and each had gathered a big bunch. I watched them as
they took the bunches and presented these to the shadowy
figure who stood in the distance.
She accepted the grasses from the
nymphs, gave each a friendly pat on the head as they bowed
toward her. Then each and every one vanished as she came
up to me, still very shadowy, only her hair could I see
for certain. She threw the bunch of grasses into the air
and it all came down over me. It was so light, so pleasant
and soothing and I realised I was really grinning from ear
to ear.
"Now you are healed. Go. And take
my blessings, and may life bring you more smiles than
sadness. There is no need for sadness. Smile with my
blessings."
And
then she was gone.
*
It
was two months before she returned, and this time she
showed herself.
In place of the speck of gold, on this
second occasion the temple filled with brilliant
multicoloured light and I heard her voice.
"Yes.
We have met before and I thank you for paying homage to
me, the Goddess of Smiles. A smile brings everything
positive toward you. Life may not always go the way you
wish for it, but better with a smile than a frown. A frown
brings all the wrong and negative vibrations and mortals
toward you.
I work well beside the Goddess of
Happiness."
And then I saw her. She was entirely
clothed in a BRILLIANT shimmering green. I could not see
her hair for the garment was one-piece with a hood which
covered her hair. But I could see she has very large
brilliant green eyes and her face is one big smile.
She was dancing, doing her own thing
and singing, obviously very happy. Then I noticed we were
in open country, lots of grass. Clumps of very long
feathery grass. Eventually she stopped dancing and drew
closer to me.
"It's time for someone else, so I
must go. I give you my blessings and my gift that everyone
smiles upon you today."
