The
God Typhon - or Typhoeus - is described by poet Hesiod as having a hundred serpent heads with fiery
eyes and dark flicking tongues. In classical mythology he
is remembered as the monster who battled with Zeus
himself. However, it is most unlikely Typhon would
actually take on Zeus in combat, but Hesiod did manage to
describe him with relative accuracy...
Some Gods
and Goddesses prefer to appear in less human-like form and
Typhon is one of these. Typhon is fierce and frightening
and team-members describe him as indeed dragon-like, and
encounters with him are seriously intense. From our experience we
have come to understand that Typhon is a storm deity, and
the word Typhoon says it all.
"It
is always appreciated when a mortal honours a God.
I am
one of the fiercest and mightiest. I am Typhon. It pleases
me you have the courage to pay homage to me. I am a
fearsome God, I know. Brave mortals I thank you for your
welcome."
On first
encounter with Typhon there was a blinding green light and
then our team-member described this powerful God:
'...First there was a brilliant green
light and then his face appeared, half human half snake,
but his tongue was spitting like a snake. Then he fully
appeared and I could seem him better. He has a snake-like
head - with eyes at the side - but human nose and ears.
There seemed to be other faces behind it, all with
spitting tongues. He has a long neck but human body, his
legs are human but his feet are pointed; no toes but feet
that come to a point. His hands are human-like.
Typhon's body looks slender but
immensely strong and it has a brown-green tinge to it, not
a human skin colour and it seems to glow, slightly
luminous, a strange effect but not scaley. No hair
anywhere.
He speaks with a hiss:
"
Few mortals realise I exist, yet there are those that hear
me and now pray to me.
I am
not an easy God to please, I expect much, but you please
me. There are many, many who do not and they do not know
it is Typhon that brings trouble toward them. I bring destruction where there is
wickedness and corruption. It is to cleanse the world from
corruption."
I
was lifted off my feet and was whizzing through the air at
a terrific and frightening speed. 200 miles an hour or so.
There were things in the way, buildings, trees, tall
statues and I was whizzing with a rushing gale all around
me and I was banged against objects and crashed into all
sorts of things, and finally fell to the ground.
I looked
around and found myself in the desert in Egypt as a long
way in the distance I could see the great pyramids.
Then I was swept up again and carried
to the shoreline as the wind became very strong. There was
a stony beach of big pebbles and a little promenade but
not many big hotels. There were palm trees and flowers and a big brick wall which I slammed into.
I
crouched down as the wind reached terrific force.
I
saw someone trying to walk along the road but he couldn't
stand. He was knocked down and blown away. The pebbles
were being whipped up and blown with quite a force. I saw
a church, quite big, and a priest beckoning people
inside. The noise of the wind was awful, I saw four people
running for the church but before they could reach the
door the entire building collapsed on top of the priest.
Then the wind died down and I heard Typhon's hissing
voice:
"Praying to a false god for
deliverance, instead of to me. That man had been giving a
talk the day before on the wickedness that was associated
with the Olympian religion in olden times. I will not
allow this. I show you how calm I can be and how ferocious
I can be. You experience it for a moment or two. Mortals
who anger me experience my anger sometimes for months or
years of your time when they leave their earthly body.
This is a special week when we the mighty
ones feel kindly towards you and to those who acknowledge
us and there are many now who do. I
have not used much strength or any bad tests on you, as
you are only a mortal. I was very gentle.
I do not give
blessings, the only thing I will give is protection from
evil.
I am Typhon and the world will
know of my existence."
When
next the storm wind blows, spare a thought for the souls
in Typhon's torment tearing through the sky, crashed
against every thing along the way. It is not the wind that
screams. It is they.
