Phorcys' Celebration

If pleased Phorcys can be kind and gentle.
Time and again, different Gods and Goddesses have explained how it does not really matter where they are honoured, so long as the homage is sincere. On some celebration days contact was established outside of the temple, sometimes in woodland or high on a hillside. For the deities of the seas and oceans a beach was perfect.
'...We travelled to the coast and found a beautiful secluded cove, there were rocks as well as sand. The sun shone and it was very peaceful. We had brought with us some red wine, some bread and cheeses for a picnic. We poured a little wine with which to offer Phorcys and spoke the contact prayer as we would have in the temple.

I watched as he appeared standing on the beach, with long white beard and bushy white eyebrows:
“I one of the mightiest of the sea Gods, one of the oldest and wisest thank you for coming to this quiet peaceful part of the sea shore to pay homage to me today. And I thank you for the wine. I have stood here looking at the two of you, your physical bodies tranquil, your auric bodies so beautiful. It is only after studying you both I allow the priestess to leave her physical body."
I felt the saltiest waft of air I have ever had in my life. It was SO salty.
"You suffer priestess at the hands of mighty ones but soon recover. There are Gods and Goddesses who have a soothing influence on the astral body and once in contact with them, pain is forgotten." I felt myself being lifted up as if levitating one foot off the ground. There were strange vibrations though not unpleasant. "Do not be frightened. You are receiving much power, accept it with love in your heart."

He led me into the sea, and we seemed to travel a long, long way, to where the water was deep and dark. Eventually he loosened his grip on my hand and we stopped.
Then I saw something move in the shadows beneath, coming fast up toward me. I tried to get away as it came closer, looking at me, and it seemed something snake-like. A snake's neck and head and half of the body. Very large. The face was about two metres long and it had strange eyes, blue-tinged but dark. It had a mouth, with a forked tongue and it hissed like a snake. I seemed to be stuck, held there and unable to get away for ages while it scrutinised me. Eventually I pulled loose and swam higher and just as I was about to break the surface the monster came after me and came close, but never actually touched me. Then I heard Phorcys speak:
"This is another sea monster who dwells deep down. There are more of them yet they have no names, as Hades has his helpers so do we."

Then whoosh, we were travelling away at frightening speed.

"You now need soothing. Let me show you my garden.”
We left the deep darkness way behind and suddenly the sea bed was below, beautiful and bright. I saw sea urchins and star fish on the sea bed, they stayed in position in a pattern and it was amazing to see. There were small pieces of coral and a type of bright orange wiry seaweed like you see in the tropics. There were so many colours of sea urchins and they looked so pretty and their tentacles just swayed as if in the movement of the sea. I saw shells – several types of abalone. There were starfish, a whole colony of them, so many, more together than I ever have seen before in one place, with colours from yellow, red, brown, pink, all sorts of colours but it was so pretty.
Phorcys was sitting in the mouth of an underwater cave and swimming around him, as if playing was a small dolphin, perhaps a baby. He put out his hand, stroking it. I was just swimming very slowly watching and I thought how lovely it was, all so pretty. He looked up at me. “I know you appreciate the beauty you see and would never harm a gentle creature like this,” and he patted the dolphin.

I felt myself being lifted from the water and placed on a beach, not all that dissimilar to the one we had chosen to worship Phorcys. Stones and sand and cliffs at the back, but instead of quiet and secluded this beach was heaving with different sea Gods and Goddesses, some monsters and even various Gods and Goddesses of the land.
I could see Silenus with one arm around a nymph and a goblet of wine in both hands, he had his arm round the nymph holding the goblet to her lips and a huge goblet for himself. Then Phorcys came closer and I knew it must be time to return. We never get to stay too long at their celebrations, usually just a glimpse and so it was.
“The two of you can celebrate with us,” said Phorcys as he returned me to our sea shore. “I give you both my loving blessings and I give you a gift. There are many gifts I can give you. Strength, energy, courage, wisdom. But these are given by many Gods and Goddesses so you do not need these from me. I shall give you a gift of something else. I return to my celebrations and you can return to yours. Take my blessings.”
And he was gone. So we celebrated there on the beach.
