The
sea God Proteus is depicted in classical mythology as a
kindly, elderly deity whose time is mostly spent with
seals and, when confronted will tell anyone whatever they
want to know, including the future. That may well be in an
ancient era when the seas were clean, but now Proteus is
not so kindly disposed to humans...
"I am
Proteus a mighty God of the seas. I thank you for
honouring me today, especially today as with the Furies I
share the same day for my creation, so celebrate with
me."
Proteus has
dark hair and seems younger than many other sea Gods -
they all look quite elderly but Proteus is only 40ish. He
has quite a 'round' face, and like most other sea Gods has
a beard but not as long and shaggy as the others and it is
short and darkish, not white. His eyes are
blue/green. Most times he appears wearing a loin cloth
around his waist. Proteus is big built with very
large feet.
"I now
have many temples and am influencing the minds of mortals.
Some are troubled one way or another, some are sick, some
are just greedy and mean. I treat them all alike and bring
my soothing presence into their mind, if not their
conscious then their auric mind. It may take a little
while but they will be influenced by my presence. The
world will change for the better, this I promise.
The great
oceans cover much of your planet, yet man does not respect
either the seas or us. He lives in ignorance and it
pleases him to do so.
In days when the Olympian faith
was practised in several countries, before setting forth
across the ocean, a sailor would pray to one of us. If
possible he would go to a temple, offer us wine, fruit or
flowers to appease us that he may have a safe journey. It
depended on how we felt whether we granted this. Yet now
man exploits the seas, doing much harm. He fishes by
rod and line, by nets, by traps and by any means he can to
make money from the creatures of the deep. Men are fishing
not just for food but for sport and so many fish are
caught by cruel hooks and are then thrown back because
they are too small.
He drills for oil and seeks other
minerals from the bed of the oceans; breaks down corals so
that they can fetch big money for him and in return he
pumps oil from his tanks, throws his waste materials into
the sea. The seashores are littered with rubbish from
ships. There are so many places where life will never be
the same because of oil, and nuclear waste thrown onto the
ocean bed. We are taking steps to stop all of this
happening and in many ways making mortals suffer.
The cruelty
of men who kill the whales and the seals does not go
unnoticed. It will stop and those in charge of this will
be punished severely. All this will change. Mortals will
live in peace, not only with themselves but with the
creatures of the seas.
A few fishermen now have given up this
work and have taken positions where they will never hurt a
living creature; yet some prefer to remain blind and deaf
although they hear me. On
one of the Pacific islands there is a group of what you
call Evangelists. They travel from island to island
recruiting the natives and are busy organising a fishing
regatta, they call it. I shall endeavour to whip up strong
seas, but this will only postpone this vile act. Those who
delight in killing sea life will always die a horrible
death. I am very old and wise; yet I can be young and very
cruel.
More
creatures dwell in the ocean than you could ever dream
about. Places where mortals do not fish, do not pollute
are so beautiful. Your world under the sea is the most
beautiful place, provided mortals leave it alone. They
will learn."
