Pan is a
mighty God in satyr form - beings which are both
'human-like' and animal. In classical works he is
generally depicted with a set of reed pipes and a garland
round his head.
In ancient times it was believed that
Pan's favourite realms were forests and green pasture,
remote mountains and hillsides; and for this reason he was
honoured by shepherds that he might protect their flocks;
and due to his particular form of power and energy he was
also honoured to ensure fertility. The worship and honouring of Pan was widespread. There were
celebrations and festivals in all regions and his altars
were bedecked with flowers. In such esteem was he held by
the ancient peoples, many thought of him as the symbol of
the universe, the great ALL, the universal God.
In recent centuries
Pan has been demonised by
the Christian Church. In a bizarre double gesture the 'diabolical' instrument of temptation
was also identified as womankind. An idiotic ideology
which effectively separated society from its natural
roots. Indeed it can truly be said, by demonising sexual
love and the spirit forces of nature, the devil himself could
not have produced a better long term strategy for the
destruction of life on earth.
The ancient peoples often spoke of
Pan's passion for music, for dancing and revelry and
Foundation team-members speak fondly of encounters with
this powerful deity.
From the
waist up Pan has the body of a man, with dark hair and
dark eyes and a mischievous elfin face. Crowning his head
are two small horns. His lower half is animal with brown
hair and hooves. He does
carry a set of pipes.
Pan often
appears from a flash of light and is then surrounded by a
brilliant sparkling emerald-green light. Pan has never
shown cruelty to any of our team-members, nor has he set
tests. 'Pan is always smiling and so happy-looking,' say
our team-members.
The following account gives an idea...
'...I was taken to a meadow with a great spreading
chestnut tree. There was a rainbow with a glistening
silver cloud at its apex, and the cloud floated gently
down and as it touched the ground there was a flash of
lightning and the sound of an explosion. The cloud faded
and there he stood, surrounded by a brilliant sparkling
emerald green light.
"There
are many ways I can appear before you."
I saw he carried a set of pipes, like
he is shown in pictures and he blew a few quick notes,
rather high-pitched unearthly sounds, but so sweet to
hear.
"I do not like what has been
said about me," then a few more notes and I heard a
rustling in the shady grass beneath the tree. There appeared two nymphs, lovely creatures in
flimsy gowns. They were watching Pan, who was aware of
their presence and smiled.
"The Christian faith has
condemned me as evil. They misjudge me. These mortals have
no time for any of us, and even think of me as the devil.
They refuse to accept that I am good and not evil. Oh foolish
mortals who would denounce me as sin. I am a God.
Theirs is only fantasy. I bring joy into people's lives.
Their god brings nothing."
Pan played some more notes, a slightly
faster series and this brought out even more beings from
the shade of the tree, other nymphs and a group of satyrs.
I
watched as the nymphs began to dance, holding hands while
the male satyrs watched. The nymphs were young and
beautiful, so slender and their movements so graceful. They
used their hands and long elegant fingers to entice the
satyrs toward them, then back away in a provocative way.
Nymphs have exceptionally pale skin, nearly
translucent. Some have fair hair and blue eyes, others
have darker hair and green eyes. They aren't very tall and
their feet are small but perfectly shaped. They were
clothed in transparent wisps of material, draped around
their body, over one shoulder then around the waist,
leaving one breast naked, a diaphanous
cloth of pale colour, light blue, green or primrose
yellow.
"I
am regarded by some, to be bad. This is not so. I can be
mischievous and I can be kind. Yet I can be hard if
necessary. I have never harmed any mortal who did not
deserve to be harmed. To any who ill-treat animals I curse
and vent my spite on them. To others I bring a feeling of
love and happiness. I take love with me wherever I go. I
give love. I give wisdom and I give strength."
I noticed the nymphs and satyrs
returned to the shade of the tree and many of them were
becoming amorous. Pan's eyes twinkled as he
gestured me to follow him across the meadow and then we stepped into a
secluded area with trees, bushes and lush short grass. Pan
sat cross-legged under a small tree while semi-hidden in
the grass and bushes were several human couples making
love. Two of the couples seemed in their middle to late
years of life, the others were younger. Pan spoke in a
whisper...
"Each one of these mortals has had
serious quarrels with their partner. But through my
influence their quarrels are healed. Is this so
wrong?"
Pan played a few more notes on his pipe and
the couples' lovemaking became more passionate.
"I
mend lovers' tiffs through playing my pipes, and rejuvenate
those who think they are too old to be really happy. I
bring people closer together, yet if I see a mortal
being unfaithful I push him or her back to where they
belong. I am mischievous and enjoy the tricks I play, yet
I can be very serious."
Pan stood and again we walked on and he talked as
we walked.
"Mortals are only half alive. They
do not behave as they should. They do not worship as they
should and do not live as they should."
Beyond the lovers' grove we stepped
into an open grassy space where there were lots of people
and as we walked I saw Pan expand upwards and outwards, -
this is the
only way I can describe it - he stood seven metres
above the people, but invisible to the crowd of humans.
"The sound of my pipes creates
great pleasure to mortals in many ways. Yet many do not
realise what is happening."
Pan started to play and
one by one the people began to laugh, then tap their feet,
then they set to dancing around the grass, shrieking with
laughter. The tune was happy and perfect for dancing, and
there was something hypnotic about it as if it reached
right into my soul and urged it to just get up and dance,
dance, dance. I saw the people felt the same, they
couldn't keep still but had to dance to the music.
Everyone was just doing their own thing. Some whirling round
and round.
"Everyone will be happy now we the
Gods and Goddesses have returned."
I
saw in the corner of the field, more nymphs. They too
began to dance, though shyly because of the humans so
close. But they too seemed to be thoroughly enjoying
themselves. Then suddenly there appeared all sorts of
sprites, tiny little creatures who appeared from the
bushes and they too started to dance, jigs and rumbas and
general jumping up and down. It was as if no living being
could resist Pan's tune. Then more elementals appeared,
all sorts of different kinds. None of them could keep
still, they danced too and there was such a beautiful
atmosphere. It was as if nature itself bent to the music
of Pan. At first he played very softly, a graceful tune
that became faster and faster until all the life forms
were whirling and dancing and laughing and singing, faster
and faster. The music reached a crescendo before gradually
it slowed again to the first graceful slow notes he began
with. Pan was staring at me. His eyes twinkled with
happiness.
"Dance. It will do you good."
So I did.
"I am now seen in different parts
of your world, and for most mortals I bring happiness. I
have been seen in woodlands, temples and the great
buildings where there are offices. The old mortals,
although old will feel young and enjoy themselves. The
young mortals will grow up to have sense of
responsibility. I influence peoples' minds and already
have. To those who treat me as a God and not as an evil
one, I give youth in their minds.
It is time mortals knew I am a
reality and not a myth. I am everywhere."
