Classical poets claimed the Goddess Night was among the
earliest of divinities, a daughter of Chaos. According to
Hesiod she is the parent of sleep, dreams, death and
happiness. She is mother of the Fates, fierce Nemesis and
doom, daylight and air. Her child with black-skinned
Erebus gave birth to Eros, the God of Love.
The Goddess
Night can appear from a brilliant flash of light or a dark
glow. On first encounter our team members report
there is a dark glow and a soft, quiet and slow voice:
"I am
the great Goddess Night. I thank you for honouring and
welcoming me. It is a long time since a mortal gave me a
thought, yet once I was prayed to every evening. Feel my
soothing presence."
At which moment our team-member
floating gently on air wanted to fall asleep. Then Night's
soft voice:
"Temples
I have now in many parts of your world. In Portugal I have
an ornate temple, not too large, but the congregation
fills the building. It was here I appeared in front of the
whole congregation, standing by the side of the priest as
he was celebrating what they call Mass. Thirty mortals saw
me. The priest did not. This caused a disturbance. There was
much talk after this service, which made him angry. A man
with fixed ideas who could not be swayed, a man who puts
himself above those who saw me, who have not had the
opportunity of his education, yet now are far more
learned.
They will never forget what they have seen and no
doubt I will appear to them again. I am patient."
