The
Cyclops - according to classical myth - are named Arges,
Steropes and Brontes, children of Uranus and Gaia, and
differed from their brothers and sisters the Titans by
having only one eye each.
The Cyclops were said to be allies of
Zeus during the Titan rebellion, and actually made him
thunderbolts to use as weapons; until one was killed by
Apollo in revenge for Zeus killing Apollo's son Asclepius
with a thunderbolt.
In reality,
the Cyclops are alive and well; so too Asclepius. The
Cyclops are also said to help Hephaestus in his volcano
forge. But during numerous encounters with Hephaestus,
never have the Cyclops been seen there, for Hephaestus has
his own helpers. And if the Cyclops had been there, our
team-member would have recognised them.
Exactly what they do is so far
not known. But whatever it is they are well-equipped.
The Cyclops appear generally as three, though there may be
more. They appear naked, apart from loin cloths. They have
huge faces with one big bloodshot eye apiece in the
middle; bulbous noses and thick lips. They are tall and
fat, extremely fat, with massive arms. They can stand
several metres tall or as high as a three storey house.
They are awesomely frightening, and frighteningly awesome
as our team-member recounts:
'...I
saw a blinding flash of light then two figures appeared,
but there could have been others.
"We are the mighty and strong Cyclops. You draw back
at the sight of us. We are ugly and we are glad of this.
You show courage to welcome us. We are not used to being
welcomed anywhere, yet you do. Welcoming us is brave;
paying homage to us is excellent. You are admired for standing up to us. Many fled from us long
ago."
Another
Cyclops appeared beside the first; then another appeared,
then another until there were about twenty of them.
"We are the only ones who can make
images of ourselves over and over again; therefore being
in many places at the same time. Our temples are now full
of us. We appeared to one woman, a strong big person in the prime of her
life. She dropped dead of fright. She has learnt much in
the past few weeks but has much more to learn. Two women
saw us and told their Christian priest who had taken over
a church built on the site of a temple to a great Goddess.
They told him about us and he chanted strange words to
send us to hell and damnation. The words were futile. We
are stronger than him."
It is
best not to offend the Cyclops. By their own proud
admission they are ugly. But it is not their ugliness you
have to worry about.
