This
God is among the most fearsome. Classical mythology names
him as one of the Titans - and as such Crius is a brother
deity to Cronos.
The Titans have immense power. Cronos for example is also known as
Saturn or Father Time. Whereas Cronos is fierce,
encounters with him although harsh and demanding are not
quite as terrifying as those with Crius.
Cronos
always adopts a 'human'-like appearance but Crius is
nothing less than ferocious. His massive hands and feet
have talons for nails, when humanoid his face is seriously
ugly (from a human point of view) with great hanging folds
of flesh. Most times he prefers to morph into a more
animalistic canine appearance.
Crius
was the first of the Titans, other than Cronos, with whom
we made contact. We knew not what to expect, other than
experiences with Cronos. But Crius was entirely different.
The
first contact there was no special light to announce his
presence. He just appeared as an outline, but he is huge,
very muscular and very big.
"I am Crius. It is time I was
respected. I accept this small temple as a place of
worship. I admire your bravery for inviting me here. I am
powerful. No mortal remembers me now. A few a long, long
time ago but not all. Yet I have great power.."
'...Then he reached out and grabbed me
and I was somewhere all red, whirling red. Not exactly
fire, but unpleasant. Although not fire, it became very
very hot and I felt I was burning and backed away, but a
long whip materialised in his hand and he wrapped it round
my ankle and tugged me over. He yanked and at that moment
the red burst into flame and fire and I could feel my
outer skin wither away and peel off. It was terribly
frightening and very painful. He pulled and pulled then
eventually stopped.
"This priestess is our
introduction. Do not think it will be as easy as this
another time. I leave you now and bless you both for
remembering me."
The
second encounter there was a light, blinding yellow light
and again his outline and that awful gruff voice.
"As I enter your temple which
vibrates with power and love, I listen to the priest's
words. I drink your wine. I inhale your incense. I am the
mighty God Crius, a God of immense strength and power.
Never forget that. Many mortals even in the old days knew
nothing of me. Now very few do, but I shall make myself
known. You priestess can come with me and stay with me as
I could use you in my work."
He just dragged me off into an open but
bleak landscape.
What's your work I wondered? Though was
too scared to ask.
Then
I saw him. A massive being, the tallest I ever have seen,
three times the height of a house. The most ferocious,
frightening humanoid. A massive face, and I could see
'human-like' feet but the toenails are talons which curl
under. A massive hand with these talons picked me up
between finger and thumb and brought me in front of his
face, It is covered in warts and hanging flesh around the
cheeks. Big warts, big hanging jowls, grey hair and shaggy
grey eyebrows. Altogether very ugly. He flicked his tongue
and that came out like a snake, it is forked and he caught
me in the fork and held me there. As he held me he shrunk
to about seven metres tall and then I saw he has two
horns, but his face was changing. It was horrible to see.
His nose became that of an animal, his hair was becoming
greyer and he more hairy, like an animal until he had
changed entirely into a huge wolf standing on hind legs.
He took me from his tongue and clawed me.
He ran one talon down my body, very
hard and I just felt like screaming.
"Did you expect me to be gentle
priestess?"
I heard sardonic laughter.
"Why do you both honour me?
Answer!!"
He has a strange voice, a bit staccato
and also as if an animal talking. It doesn't sound like a
human or a God talking but a bit like a voice within a
bark. "Answer me!"
I said we pay homage because you are a
mighty one of the Olympians.'
"Is that all? IS THAT ALL!"
I said it is our duty to honour you.
He held me in his talons. "Are you
frightened?"
I said, very.
"Good, good. That is why I am
here. To frighten you."
Then
his horns began to change, they became huge like a stag's
antlers but with fewer spars than a deer, then a talon
tore through my back, it was agony. I just wanted to
scream. He seemed more bear-like now than a wolf. I
couldn't take much more, I felt about to faint from pain
and fright.
"Your world is changing. It may
appear to a mortal mind, which is small, to get worse in
many ways. Yet it really is getting better. If the mortal
mind can understand. We take over, slowly in your time, in
ours the flick of a hand."
And the talon tore through me deeper as
he said that.
"Many mortals in my temples feel
frightened and so they should." And he turned me
round and clawed my front, deep nasty gashes. "By the
feeling of fear they will stop stealing, lying and other
crimes they commit. I punish the spirits of those who have
been cruel or wicked. Souls that commit atrocities, I make
them suffer before sending them to the Devourer. I punish
severely."
Crius stopped his clawing.
"You are brave and do not scream.
I expected many screams but received none. I Crius have
had all the homage I want today. You may return. You have
my admiration. Gifts? The courage to face me again,
strength and power. You can have blessings if you wish. I
do not give them easily."
Then there was a whoosh of air and the
light that surrounded me turned to silver and then
disappeared.
Although
seriously frightening, team-members have always made it
safe home from an encounter with Crius. True they picked
up a few cuts and bruises, but this deity never is gentle.
But if you find yourself with Crius and have no return
ticket...
You are in trouble.
